Rakiura Trip for 2010

Updated 22th July 2011

Welcome to Rakiura.

The Rakiura Maori Land Trust gateway to Rakiura. Our website aims to provide you access to information about Rakiura, the Trust and its activities as the Land Administrator of most of the Maori land on Rakiura (Stewart Island), New Zealand. The Rakiura Maori Land Trust (RMLT) is the largest private landowner outside of the New Zealand government on Rakiura. The Trust holds these lands in trust for many of the Rakiura Maori descendants, (the Indigenous inhabitants of the island), whose history goes back over 700 years. RMLT has a rich history with this very unique and beautiful island paradise, which is the third largest Island of New Zealand. Over time we will be building an excellent resource of information for you to access and learn about Rakiura and the activities of the Trust along with its current and historical association with the island. We hope you will find this site useful as it develops and we look forward to your feedback on how we can better deliver you a useful and valuable service. For a further overview of the island follow this link to  Wikipedia Rakiura (Stewart Island).

Our Mission

The Rakiura Maori Land Trust is entrusted to liaise with interested groups and prudently manage the affairs of all financial assets and land holdings for the ultimate benefit of current and future stakeholders

Rakiura Maori Land Trust Profile

The Rakiura Maori Land Trust is registered under the TE TURE WHENUA MAORI ACT 1993 as an Ahu Whenua Trust. The Trust holds nearly 6% of the total land mass of Rakiura (Stewart Island) in nearly 100 different blocks of land. With the total land mass of Rakiura at 1746 sq Km the Trust manages nearly 105 sq-km of this island. Click here for TE TURE WHENUA MAORI ACT 1993

By comparison Rakiura is nearly 3 times the size of Singapore at 693 sq Km with a population of 4.4 million in 2002 and is slightly bigger than the Hawaiian Island of Oahu, (home to Honolulu), with an island population of 876,000 in 2000. However with a population on Rakiura of around 350 most of this beautiful island is untouched and holds enormous potential for the future.

The Trust is governed by 6 Trustees, which two are elected every year for a 3 year term by the beneficial owners.

The Trust is currently preparing profiles on all the land blocks under its control so that the Trust can make better use of the resource for the ultimate benefit of the beneficial owners. Click Here to see Land Schedule
